The 3 ring cheek piece introduces poll pressure.

The 5 ring mouthpiece promotes pressure on the tongue, effectively stopping the horse from pushing through the bit.

The added poll pressure to the strength of this mouthpiece makes this bit combination fairly strong. It should be used sparingly and as a training or correctional aid.

To use this cheekpiece combination correctly, the bit should sit up into the horse's mouth so that when the cheek piece slides around to a 1/3rd of its leverage, you should start to feel the poll section of the bridle start to apply poll pressure. With the bit sitting loosely in the horse's mouth, you will not achieve the desired combination effect of tongue and poll pressure.
